about :: 1-42

1-42 is an online response to being a twenty-something: caught up in a myriad of life and career experiences. A magazine that provides information on news, culture, music, careers, art, travel, humanitarian action, writing and politics, 1-42 aims to inform and inspire our constituents through our work and simultaneously partner with twenty-something men and women to create it. 1-42 speaks to an Internet generation of men and women who are not merely satisfied learning about the information we provide, but actively contribute in their own way.

Dissatisfied with the notion that a publication could only come to life with capital and print, 1-42 was conceived by editor-in-chief Yasmin Tabi, herself a twenty-something having just graduated with an MA in Publishing. After recruiting a community of writers, photographers, artists, musicians, and editors, Tabi launched 1-42 in the Fall of 2002. The core team has now grown to include Christina Glavas, managing editor, Kevin Polowy, entertainment editor, and as well as approximately 40 staff writers, give or take. with office hubs in New York City and San Diego.

Working with a staff of upwards of 40, 1-42 is aggressively expanding. Recruitment of diverse writers has begun from colleges across the country. What most people don't realize is that 1-42 is a direct result of volunteer efforts from the writers and editors. We've all got a full-time gig elsewhere and really, truly, just do this for fun. Any banners or links you see on our site are there purely for two reasons: 1. We like the content and/or 2. We're exchanging links with said org/co.,/group to increase promotion of our site.

With the recent launch of our new department, action/example, 1-42 is committed to showcasing those in our generation who are volunteering or working in the non-profit and humanitarian aid sectors of society. These steps have truly enabled us to diversify our audience and editorial focus. 1-42 now organizes bi-monthly events with local DJs wherein guests donate funds to 1-42's NPO/NGO of choice. Thus far we have raised funds for The Polaris Project, Human Rights Watch and Project: Think Different. Future plans to continue this trend and secure promotional opportunities are in development. If you or anyone you know is interested in assisting in organizing and promotion, please contact the editors. Please note that all funds go directly to the NPO/NGO of choice; nothing is kept by 1-42 or our collaborators.

Contributions to the magazine are always encouraged and desired. Artists, writers, musicians, teachers, producers, activists, promoters or anyone who is interested in contributing content to 1-42 can contact us at editors@onefortytwo.com.

Welcome to 1-42, the magazine of our generation.
